Julier Pass x Splügen Pass x Maloja Pass

Our trip began with high hopes and clear skies as we eagerly pedalled towards our first destination: Julier Pass. This initial climb proved to be a pleasant warm-up, but it was the descent that stole our hearts with its long, straight stretches allowing us to reach fast speeds.
The road to Thusis was less remarkable, characterized by nice tunnels but heavy traffic. However, the weather remained cooperative until we neared Andeer, where a gentle rain added a refreshing twist to our ride.

The real magic began as we approached Splügen. The ascent brought challenging serpentines and a surge in traffic. After all, it was a Sunday.

The weather shifted once more, and the heat increased... The descent from Splügen... It was nothing short of a cyclist's dream, with an astonishing number of sharp turns on an almost treacherously steep road. It was a descent for the books, making us appreciate our choice to explore this region on two wheels.

Upon reaching Chiavenna, we decided to indulge in some well-deserved pizza before taking on the final climb to Maloja. Still, it was a very demanding ascent, one that left us parched and weary.

The "last" meters to the summit of Maloja Pass felt never-ending, with traffic and narrow turns testing our nerves. Finally reaching the top was a relief moment. It was a day filled with challenges and exhilaration, a ride that pushed our limits to the max.

Splügen Pass earns a solid 10 out of 10. The effort was absolutely worth it. I can't wait to take on this challenge again next year, but this time from Chavenna. If you're seeking a cycling adventure that's as tough as it is rewarding, look no further than Splügen Pass - from either side, it's simply amazing!

Umbrail Pass x Stelvio Pass

Despite our exhaustion from the previous day, we decided to take on the challenge of climbing Stelvio.

The weather was a pleasant surprise, and though it wasn't very sunny, it was warm enough to attempt the 2700m ascent. Contrary to the rumours of it being boring, Stelvio turned out to be unexpectedly cool.
The first part of the climb to Umbrail was surprisingly easy and quick. The descent through Umbrail to Switzerland was breathtaking, and the climb from Prato, while demanding, was mind-blowing as well.

The final turns tested us mentally more than physically, and we reached the top late in the evening. Our fear of a difficult and cold descent was unfounded, as it turned out to be a lot of fun. Despite many motorbikes, the descent was fast and enjoyable, with amazing turns and smooth asphalt and when we finally arrived in Bormio, it was still warm and sunny.

For sure Stelvio proved to be a trip highlight - don't let the naysayers deter you; it's worth every moment with its incredible turns and views. It's one of Europe's longest climbs, after all!

Albula Pass x Maloja Pass

An unexpected day in Switzerland! Despite the promising forecast, we encountered snow at the top of Albula Pass. Freezing temps and shaky descents forced a change of plans.
